Subiaco Oval - Perth, Australia

Roberts Road, Subiaco

Visit Website

Subiaco Oval is the home of football - and we're not talking about soccer, rugby league or rugby union. For West Australians, it can mean only one code and there is no other. It's Aussie Rules. The state's two home teams are the West Coast Eagles and the Fremantle Dockers. When these sides are in town and playing it means empty shops and packed pubs - particularly when they play each other, also known as Derby Day (pronounced the American way: Der-bee not Dar-bee). This clash happens twice a year so if you happen to be in town, don't expect to buy a ticket to the match, but you can see it live on any TV. We recommend a local pub like The Victory Hotel (Hay Street) or The Subiaco Hotel (Hay Street). Subiaco Oval also sees its fair share of rugby union matches since a new local side was established in 2006, the Western Force. To visit "Subi" Oval is to witness stereotypical Aussie sports culture (or perhaps mania is a better word), so attend a game if you can.
