Can you keep a secret? This tiny Japanese restaurant is one of Sydney's hidden treasures and we want to keep it that way! Wasavie's low profile is surprising given its location just a quick hop from Paddington's bustling "Five Ways", but that's just the way we like it. The setting is cosy: there's only one long communal table (plus a few tables outside) so be prepared to cuddle up. What to order? Well, the sushi and sashimi are a must - you can often watch the chef slicing fresh tuna or salmon in the open kitchen. Then there's lip-smackingly good classics like teriyaki chicken and tempura, but you simply must try the signature dishes: pork belly and the melt-in-the-mouth eggplant with sweet miso. The best bit? The prices here are so low you'll stare at the bill with disbelief. And in case you need another reason to visit, Wasavie is BYO so you can bring your favourite bottle from home, or try the bottle shop next door. We recommend you arrive early or late as no bookings are taken (7-8.30pm is the busiest time). Facing a wait? Try the pub down the road for a few drinks. Average main: $12.
