You may not have heard of David Thompson, but you'll be singing his praises after a visit to Sailor's Thai. The Aussie chef is one of the world's leading authorities on Thai cuisine (and behind Nahm in London, the first Thai restaurant to receive a Michelin star) and co-owner of this restaurant/canteen in Sydney's historic Rocks district. While he's not behind the stoves anymore, his legacy is evident in the authentic yet modern Thai dishes, all gorgeously presented. The upmarket restaurant found downstairs is excellent, however we recommend you join the locals for a quick bite at the communal table at the "canteen" upstairs. The food isn't really any different and the prices are much friendlier (although don't come for a romantic date as you can practically hear every conversation in the room). The menu is different every time we go, but do try the duck or the crispy fish salad if you can. It's the perfect pre-theatre dinner spot or Friday night feed (although do book ahead). Average main: $23 (canteen); $33 (restaurant).
