Situated in a grandiose building overlooking the Domain park, the Art Gallery of New South Wales features a particularly good Australian and Aboriginal collection, as well as Asian and European works. If you're not an art connoisseur, or simply want greater insights into the paintings, look out for the guided tours and exhibition talks which are held daily - the guides know their stuff and will help you better appreciate what you're seeing. Our favourite exhibition is the Archibald Prize, held each year between March and May. It's a national competition for the best portrait of a significant Australian and always manages to be controversial. The gallery is free (although you have to pay for some special exhibitions) and it's open 10am to 5pm, every day except Good Friday and Christmas Day. On Wednesdays it stays open until 9pm.
