Bondi Beach - Sydney, Australia

Campbell Parade, Bondi

Visit Website

Probably the most famous beach in Australia, Bondi is breezy, brash and always busy (that's about all the appropriate 'b' adjectives we could think of!) It's not the prettiest or largest beach in town, but it's the heart and soul of Aussie beach culture. Bondi is teeming with surfers, young locals and backpackers and the surrounding area has become kind of grungy, although there are a few cool cafes and bars nearby (see our Icebergs entry or check out North Bondi Italian Food, the hottest new restaurant). Any local will tell you that one of the best ways to see the coast is from the clifftop walk between Bondi and Bronte beaches - it truly is spectacular. Although be prepared for a wind-swept look when you're done! Otherwise, jump in for a swim and don't worry about sharks (there's an off-shore net) but the currents (known as "rips") can be strong, so swim between the red and yellow flags at all times. On weekends in summer you can hardly move for all the people, so this isn't the place for beach cricket or games. But it's perfect for sunbathing, swimming, people-watching and learning to surf.
