Things to do in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia

Printable guide

Best known as "the little bit on the end of the map of Australia" Tasmania is one of the best kept secrets in the southern hemisphere, an island of natural wonders, beautiful beaches and home to one of the most picturesque cities in the world, Hobart. Flanked by Mount Wellington and the Derwent River, Hobart offers a cornucopia of cosmopolitan dining, great shopping and old-world maritime charm, all within easy walking distance. Elizabeth Street is home to the main tourist centre and shopping precinct, but Hobart's history lies in its bustling trading port and much of that hustle and bustle remains today in the variety of restaurants, cafes, pubs, vibrant arts community and cool clubs dotted around Sullivans Cove and Salamanca Place. Give your hip pocket a workout at the Salamanca Markets on Saturday. Indulge your palate with a range of dishes featuring local ingredients and discover why Tasmanian wines, dairy and seafood are some of the best in the world. Or just kick back and relax in one of the many pubs and cafes, most of which feature stunning waterfront views. Want to discover Hobart's history? Take a Sullivan's Cove walking tour. Rather save your feet? Grab a scenic tour on one of the red double decker buses (call 6236 9116 for details). Either way make sure you leave enough time to visit historic Battery Point and maybe take a cruise (or two) to the Cadbury Factory in Claremont. If you can, try and time your trip around the internationally renowned Ten Days on the Island festival or the annual week-long Tastes of Tasmania (at the end of December). And yes, Hobart can be chilly (so pack plenty of warm clothes) but even on the coldest of days the skies are clear and the sun is out. We're betting you'll find Hobart's laidback lifestyle the perfect getaway from whatever "mainland" you're from.
