The Gold Coast offers one of the greatest beach strips in the world. More than 70km of sandy white beaches caters for hard-core surfers, families and anyone in between. The city itself experienced massive growth in the 1980s and the architecture and image suffered as a result. However in recent years a vibrant dining and nightlife scene has re-emerged, along with a number of new or revitalised hotels and sights. If golf is your thing, there are some seriously good courses around the coast. While the big drawcards for families are the theme parks where littlies can go nuts for hours on end - try the three park combined pass for the best value for money. One word of warning: avoid the Gold Coast at all costs during late November, when thousands of school-leavers descend for "Schoolie's Week" - it ain't pretty. Also, be extra careful when swimming here as the currents (known as "rips") can be strong and many an unsuspecting tourist has been caught out (tragically, there are a number of drownings each year). Our advice? Swim between the red and yellow flags, follow the instructions of lifeguards (they're not just there for you to perve on!) and wave your hand in the air if you get into trouble.
