Things to do in Vancouver, British Colombia, Canada

Printable guide

Walk around the city and look at the faces. It's like being in the lobby of the United Nations. Vancouver is arguably the most international city on the continent, exceeded only by New York in its ethnic diversity. Huge parts of the city and suburbs are ethnic centres with large populations of East Asian, Chinese, Japanese, Italians, Greeks, among other cultural origins including the original inhabitants, the First Nations People, giving Vancouver its unique international flavour.

Only Rio de Janeiro and Hong Kong can compete with Vancouver's spectacular and physical setting that sees mountains, city and ocean seamlessly merge. The residents on the city's forested and mountainous North Shore regularly encounter black bears, deer and the occasional mountain lion. Waterways still carry migrating salmon to their spawning areas. Now and then an Orca takes a wrong turn at the entrance to English Bay and sails into the harbour. Coyotes are seen throughout Vancouver's city parks and they often make amused golfers wait until the wily critters have crossed golf course fairways.

Vancouver is downtown-oriented with the major hotels, nightclubs, restaurants and theatres mainly located within the expansive area. It's a walker's city - safe, colourful, vibrant - and a city of distinct neighbourhoods, even downtown. Walk through Chinatown and it's like being in Asia. But there's also Gastown, Yaletown, and the West End, all of which are within easy walking distance of one another.

Take a mini-ferry across false Creek to Granville Island with its farmers market and funky boutiques; cruise along Robson Street with its upscale shopping and restaurants; or take the Skyride up Grouse Mountain for what is the most fantastic view in all of Canada. To the west is a mix of green and blue, a series of protective islands between Vancouver Island and the mainland. The undisturbed landscape of rising mountains and humpbacked islands looks much as it must have on the day the earth was created. And sometime during your visit, sip a drink in the Pan Pacific Cascade's Lounge in the late twilight and look out over the water to the dark-edged mountains outlined in the orange sky.
