If you're anything like us, your awareness of Hong Kong's history probably includes some vague ideas about British colonial rule and knowledge about the handover to China in '97. Fill in the blanks at this fascinating museum, which really is worth a special visit. Comprised of eight exhibition halls, you'll be guided through different periods of the city's long history. Skip through the first two galleries (unless you're really interested in "the rocks of Hong Kong" and Neolithic tribes) and start at the dynasties exhibition. Highlights include the exhibits on cultural groups in HK, the Opium Wars, British occupation and modern Hong Kong. The life-sized models of homes, shops and streets are excellent, as is the vast collection of modern cultural items - everything from household goods to books and music. Admission is $10 and try to allow a few hours for your visit.
