Wandering up the steep cobblestone alley that is Peel Street, the discreet and dimly lit entrance to Shui Hu Ju could easily go unnoticed. But this is a restaurant that is worth seeking out. Initially, you feel like you're walking into someone's home as you step through sheer red curtains into different rooms, settle into the high-backed traditional wooden chairs and open the drawers of your table to find napkins and chopsticks. However there's nothing traditional or homely about the food - this is innovative modern Chinese cooking at its best. Do not miss the signature dishes: duck and cucumber salad, deep-fried lamb shank (sounds gross, we know, but you'll have to trust us on this one) and chicken with Szechuan chillies. The dumplings and soups are also excellent, and be sure to try their special tea blends. Average main is about HK$180.
