San Lorenzo Central Market - Florence, Italy

Via dell'Ariento, San Lorenzo

Visit Website

One of the oldest markets in Florence, San Lorenzo is the place to pick up the best Italian fresh produce, meat, seafood and dry goods and revel in the lively atmosphere. The iron and glass building was built in 1874 and has two storeys: upstairs for fruit and vegies, downstairs for everything else. While non-foodies may be a little put off by some of the stalls (think freshly killed animals and a wide selection of offal), you can't help but be inspired to go home and cook. Most of the vendors don't mind you having a taste of the produce, so head to the delis and ask for an "assagio" of favourites such as prosciutto or pecorino cheese. We recommend shopping here for picnic provisions and then heading to one of Florence's squares or the Boboli Gardens for an al fresco lunch.
