There are few feelings quite like the ones stirred when staring up at the imposing grandeur of one of the most renowned landmarks on the planet. And while this is one place that has been on the tourist trail for hundreds of years and consequently devoured by the masses on a daily basis, it should be your first port of call on any visit to the Eternal City. Built by the Emperor Vespasian and completed in the year AD 80, this is a symbol of the trials and tribulations of this city over a few thousand years. The best way to approach the Colosseum for the quintessential view is to come by Via dei Fori Imperiali (the main road leading North to the historic centre of Rome) or from the metro station across the road. It's also worth noting that the entry fee to the Colosseum also includes entry to the nearby wonders of the Palatine Hill (see Attractions).
