If you think you need to be religious to enjoy the Vatican, think again. A wonder of architecture, art and sculpture, St. Peter's Basilica - the foremost church - is sure to impress even the staunchly non-religious. It is somewhat of a novelty to stand with one foot in Italy and the other in a different country - because it really is. Upon entering St. Peter's, you will find Michelangelo's famous Pieta (behind a bulletproof screen) to your right - a taste of the classic artworks which lies ahead. It's worth climbing to the dome of the Basilica for a spectacular panorama of the entire city of Rome. No visit to the Vatican is complete without a long queue before being swept off your feet by the wonderful Sistine Chapel, housed within the Vatican Museums.
