The Capitoline Museums are as much an attraction as Michaelangelo's famous Piazza del Campidoglio, the unassumingly triumphant square that houses them, set on the famous Capitoline Hill. The museums are split over three buildings, built between the 12th and 17th centuries, but were redesigned by Michaelangelo according to his plans for the Piazza. For the prettiest approach to the museums, come up to the Piazza via the Cordonata di Michelangelo (Michaelangelo's steps). One of the many highlights of the museums is the bronze she-wolf statue in Palazzo dei Conservatori, which dates back to the 5th century BC and depicts the mythical founding of Rome.
