Piazza Navona - Rome, Italy
Piazza Navona, Roma
To experience Piazza Navona is to soak up Rome's most beautiful Baroque square. Built on a first century Roman stadium called the Stadio di Domiziano (this is fairly evident by the Piazza's shape), Piazza Navona was given the term 'square' in the 15th century. Nowadays, the square is teeming with tourists sipping an espresso or cappuccino in Piazza Navona's many cafes and restaurants. Sit at the foot of the Bernini's 17th century fountains and visit the church of Sant'Agnese in Agone (whose dome dominates the square) for a glimpse at a truly Baroque interior. However, don't overlook the smaller church of Nostra Signora del Sacro Cuore, which oozes 15th century character.
