Trevi Fountain - Rome, Italy
Piazza di Trevi, Roma
If it weren't for the sheer ambitious nature of this Baroque Fountain, conceived by Nicola Salvi in the 1730s, this might well be an area to steer clear of. The stunning sculpture, depicting Neptune's Chariot, is as much grandiose and imposing as it is delicate and sophisticated. However, the problem here is the sheer number of tourists. Because of the relatively small area of Piazza Trevi, this feels like the most visited spot in Rome, and it is always gridlocked in high season. If you don't feel like braving the crowds, try to arrive before 9am or visit later at night (there is an uncanny silence here at 1am on a summer weekday!). Watch your pockets, and be sure to throw in a small coin to assure that you return to Rome some day.
