Spanish Steps - Rome, Italy

Piazza di Spagna, Roma

Canonised by a few classic films, the Spanish Steps, in Rome's Piazza di Spagna, are relatively young by Roman standards, built in the early 18th century. Why Spanish? The 138 steps connect the Spanish Embassy to the piazza below.
Surrounded by a plethora of high-street fashion stores from Armani to Zegna on Via dei Condotti, this is a good spot for people watching, or for a quick lunch and time out on the staircase before resuming your day's sightseeing. However, we think that the scalinata (as it is locally known) serves only one true purpose- to present the unsuspecting climber with a romantic view of gorgeous terracotta rooftops, trees and imposing church domes. For a truly amazing view, especially during spring and summer, take a short walk down Viale Trinita` de` Monti, connecting the steps with the parklands of Villa Borghese.
