It was once said that if you control Osaka Castle, you control all of Japan. Built in 1598 and surrounded by a bewildering network of moats, stone walls and dead-ends, the castle once had the space and the means to house and feed 50,000 troops for an entire year. Some castles are aesthetically pleasing and some are meant to make a fine residence, but this is a castle in the truest sense, built purely for defence. Equally impressive from both an engineering and an architectural perspective, Osaka Castle has been an iconic symbol of the city for more than 400 years (nowadays it appears on the city crest). Although it won't be featuring in a Disney movie any time soon, the beauty of Osaka Castle lies not in fancy eaves, bells and trimmings, but in its irreproachable practicality - not unlike the city of Osaka itself.
