Are you a beer-swilling carnivore or a culturalist in search of the real Osaka? Whatever your answer is (believe it or not), you'll be thrilled with Haya, a busy, affordable little restaurant which represents Osaka-style dining at its unpretentious best. You are led to a private booth and plonked down in front of a large pot of boiling water. Moments later, your drinks arrive with two large trays, one of meat and one of tofu and vegetables. A quick tutorial from your friendly waiter and you're soon preparing your own shabu shabu, so named for the swishing sound the meat makes as you cook it. You pay one flat fee so just keep ordering meat, beer and veggies until you've had enough, bearing in mind that after 90 minutes you have to make way for the next group of hungry diners (so go easy on the small talk). Average buffet course: 2500 yen.
