Set amid the hustle and bustle of Osaka's working class south lies a quiet oasis of history. Shitenno-ji is the oldest temple in Japan and was first constructed back in 593AD. Despite numerous renovations, facelifts and one major reconstruction, the layout largely remains the same. This isn't one of those places where you arrive, take a picture, wait until a reasonable period of time has elapsed and then leave - the temple compound itself is quite large and there are dozens of ancient-looking buildings. It almost feels like a movie set and there are plenty of little side alleys and curiosities in the complex. Don't miss out on the temple museum, which houses some precious artifacts from times past. The museum closes at 4pm, although you can enter the temple grounds at any time.
