At first glance, it looks like a weird after hours hang out for Franciscan monks. Inspired by Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, which saw Westminster Abbey converted into a nightclub, Christon Café is adorned with stained glass, chandeliers, paintings and various relics which contrast starkly with the mood lighting, garish candles and crossover house music. If you approach the bar, you'll see that you are actually approaching an altar and behind all this is an enormous reproduction of Da Vinci's The Last Supper. Not that this bizarre set-up deters anyone. They had to move into bigger premises in 2003 because the old café had been just too popular. You won't find any two-pound steaks on the menu and the emphasis is on small and refined. The wine list is extensive and the desserts are worth a try. We're betting though that it won't be the food and drink you remember about this place.
