Batu Caves - Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Jalan Industri Batu Caves

The Batu Caves are a prime example of the unique blend of old and new in today's Kuala Lumpur. Standing proudly amidst the modern developments of the city, these ancient limestone caves are used by Hindu devotees as temples. There are three main caves: the Temple Cave houses shrines and statues of Hindu Gods, the Dark Cave is for the more adventurous (it's a one mile-long trek with flash lights through a network of caverns) and the Art Gallery Cave, where you can find the stories of the Hindu Gods. Be prepared to climb the 272 steps to the temple and watch out for the macaques monkeys - they are harmless and cute, but have a tendency to run off with your belongings when you're not looking!

If you're not squeamish, the best time to go is during the Hindu festival of Thaipusam. Every year, thousands of devotees leads a procession through town, ending at the Temple Cave. The devotees pierce skewers through their cheeks and tongues, or insert steel hooks into their backs and chests to carry metal frames that can weight as much 50 pounds, all as an act of penance. Ouch.
