Merdeka Square - Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Jalan Raja, Kuala Lumpur

Visiting Merdeka Square is like seeing a time capsule of Malaysian history, with many remarkable buildings just begging to be photographed. On 31st August 1957, the Union Jack was lowered for the last time in Merdeka Square, signalling the birth of Malaysia as an independent country. Today, the world's tallest flagpole (100 metres high) stands on the same spot. Directly across the road is the Islamic-inspired Sultan Abdul Samad Building built in 1848. On the other side is the Royal Selangor Club, once an exclusive club for British officers before independence. Not far from here are St. Mary's Cathedral and the Old City Hall, both survivors from the colonial era.
