Things to do in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Printable guide

Kuala Lumpur, or KL as it's fondly called by the locals, is a melting pot of cultures with old Malaysian traditions blending with fast-paced modern developments. Great care has been taken to preserve its diverse local colours and traditions, ensuring that it remains a culturally rich city. Kuala Lumpur (its name means "muddy estuary" in Malay) has come a long way from its humble origins as a sleepy tin mining village to the bustling city it is today with a population of 4.2 million. Influences of the Malay, Chinese and Indians can be found everywhere: colonial buildings, Malay kampung houses, Chinese shophouses, Hindu temples and modern skyscrapers stand alongside each other.

Start off with a visit to the sky bridge at the Petronas Twin Towers, one of the world's tallest buildings. Take a stroll through the lively night market of Petaling Street (Chinatown), where you can find everything from cheap knock-offs to fortune-tellers. Shop 'till you drop at Bukit Bintang, KL's largest shopping district, or take in the vibrant nightlife at the trendy, pubs-lined lanes of Bangsar. Looking for good photo opportunities? Not to be missed are the colonial era Sultan Abdul Samad buidling, the century-old mosque at Masjid Jamek, the monumental Thean Hou Temple and the elaborately decorated Sri Mahamariaman Temple. If you're up to a little exercise, climb the 272 stairs to the top of the limestone Batu Caves, a Hindu temple 13km from the city. Of course, a visit to KL is never complete without sampling some of the local food. Hawker centers and local restaurants are littered throughout the city. However, if you're missing home, rest assured there are plenty of international restaurants to choose from.

Getting around is easy - taxis are abundant and cheap, and there's also the Light Rail Transit (LRT) which has a stop at most major shopping and housing districts. Perhaps one of the best ways to sightsee and to escape the heat is to take a ride in the air-conditioned and fully elevated monorail, offering you a bird's eye view of the city.
