In a city of safe architecture, the Esplanade stands out as one of Singapore's most impressive modern edifices. Commonly referred to as the "durians", given their resemblance to the famous spiky fruit, the Esplanade cost a whopping $600 million to build and is part of Singapore's big push to become a cultural hub in Asia. You can wander around inside the Esplanade or catch a performance (book through SISTIC), and there's a great rooftop terrace next to theatre four. However, the best photo op of the building itself is from the jetty next to the merlion on the other side of Marina Bay.
