Lau Pa Sat Hawker Centre - Singapore, Singapore

One of the experiences you absolutely cannot miss when you come to Singapore is eating out in a local hawker centre. Situated all over the island, these complexes contain former street food stalls and offer Asian meals at low prices (everything is under $5). Lau Pa Sat is one of the oldest examples and has the most atmospheric surroundings - the cast-iron carousel structure has been here since 1894. We recommend trying a local specialty - satays, chicken rice, popiah (spring rolls), fish ball soup, char kway teow, laksa or roti prata - washed down with a lime juice. Then grab some cutlery and find yourself a table. There are never any napkins so bring your own (wet wipes are even better). But rest assured that the hygiene standards are high and every stall has to display its rating (from A-E). If you're really keen on the local hawker experience, pick up a copy of Makansutra's guide - he's the Singaporean guru on where to eat - from a local bookstore.
