Sultan Mosque (Masjid Sultan) - Singapore, Singapore
Bussorah Street, Kampong Glam
Visit Website
This striking central mosque is found in the Arab quarter of Singapore, otherwise known as Kampong Glam. The street signs let you know you've arrived in this up-and-coming little nook of the city: Baghdad Street, Arab Street, Haji Lane and Muscat Street are the ones to look out for. Bussorah Street has recently been transformed into a lovely pedestrian mall lined with shops selling fabrics, rugs, antiques and curios (it's particularly good for souvenirs). There's also a Malay cultural centre (worth a visit as it was the former home of the Singaporean royal family) and a few interesting restaurants and cafes - try the Moroccan-inspired Cafe Samar on Baghdad Street. We think the area is really going to take off, so make a visit before it becomes too touristy. If you'd like to explore the area in more detail and pick up some history, try the informative walking tour offered by The Original Singapore Walks on Thursday mornings.
