Hotel 1929 paved the way for the current wave of mid-priced boutique hotels in Singapore. It's situated in a row of restored shophouses in the heart of Chinatown, so it's perfect if you want to explore off the beaten tourist track. Famous for its collection of designer chairs (think Jacobsen, Eames, Panton et al), the 1929 features contemporary design and every room has been individually styled. There's also a hugely popular resturant, Ember, that's worth booking ahead for. Downsides? The rooms are teeny tiny, so we recommend booking at least a deluxe size ($165). But the prices make up for it - you can even get doubles for as little as $110. 1929 is not for everyone, but if you have an eye for design, enjoy staying in unique hotels and are travelling light, it's a winner.
