The Peranakan food at Blue Ginger provides visitors with a unique taste of Singapore - one that you're unlikely to find anywhere else in the world. We can hear you saying: Peranakan - what's that? Well, sadly not many people have heard of this culture, a fusion of Chinese and Malay influences that emerged when Chinese men (known as babas) married Malay women (known as nonyas) in the "Straits Settlements" - Malacca, Penang and Singapore. Their cuisine is a melange of cultural influences, including Portuguese, Dutch, Malay and Indonesian. Blue Ginger is one of only a small number of Peranakan restaurants in Singapore and it has a few signature dishes, namely the otak otak (fish cakes), ngo heong (five spice spring rolls), ayam buah keluak (braised chicken with Indonesian black nuts) and udang masak assam gulai (prawns with tamarind and lemongrass). If you're game, finish off with durian chendol for dessert. The best bit about coming to this colourfully restored shophouse? You're guaranteed to eat something delicious that you've never tried before.
