Things to do in Singapore, Singapore

Printable guide

Most of what you've heard about Singapore is true: it's a clean, green, ordered, law-abiding, modern city. But somewhere along the line it developed a reputation for being sterile, even boring, and we couldn't disagree more. Sure, it doesn't have the buzz of frenetic Hong Kong or Bangkok, but Singapore has a multicultural vibrancy which is unmatched anywhere in Asia. You just have to look a little bit harder and be prepared to scratch beneath the surface.
Perhaps one of the best aspects about Singapore is its food, and the locals have a passion for eating which verges on the obsessive (try asking a taxi driver for his favourite hawker centre and he'll never shut up!) You simply cannot visit without sampling local fare at a hawker centre, but there are also plenty of trendy cafes and high end restaurants if they're your thing.

Only here for a day? Jump on one of the hop-on, hop-off buses to see the main sights. If you have a few more days, we recommend more aimless exploration of the city's ethnic neighbourhoods: Little India, Chinatown and Kampong Glam being the most colourful. You could also hit the shops on Orchard Road, explore the nightlife around Mohammed Sultan Road and learn about Singapore's history at the Asian Civilisations Museum andthe National History Museum. The Night Safari and the Singapore Zoo are also excellent, particularly if you're travelling with little ones. If you have more time, take in a performance at the Esplanade and catch the cable car from Mount Faber to Sentosa Island. Getting around is easy as pie - the MRT is well-located and hyper-efficient, but then you may just find it easier to take taxis everywhere: they're air-conditioned and very cheap.
