Want to travel through time? Make a trip around the world in just one day? Both are possible with a visit to the world famous British Museum. The largest museum in the UK, the British Museum is also one of the oldest museums in the world, dating back to 1753. Highlights of a visit include seeing the Rosetta Stone (the ancient stone that helped historians deciper hieroglyphics) or the Magna Carta (the 1215 English charter of freedoms). If Egyptian mummies are your thing, the museum is home to more ancient Egyptian artefacts than any other place outside of Cairo. Make sure you pop your head into the impressive "Reading Room" as well.
Free admission helps it to retain its title of "most visited attraction in London", which means it can get pretty busy at times, so get there early. Luckily there's a great café on the ground floor if you need a break from the crowds. The museum is open daily from 10am to 5.30pm, or until 8.30pm on Thursday and Friday nights.
