Love it or hate it, modern art certainly provokes a reaction. To see what the fuss is all about head to the Tate Modern, Britain's national gallery of international modern art. Opened in 2000, the gallery houses art from as far back as the 1500s until the present day. You'll see works by such greats as Warhol, Picasso, Dalí and Matisse, as well as more unusual exhibitions by newcomers. This impressive gallery is housed within the old Bankside Power Station, making the space itself as much of an attraction as the collections it contains. Enter via the Turbine Hall, which used to house the electricity generators of the old power station. It's seven storeys tall and features specially commissioned work by up-and-coming artists.
Suffering from art-overload? Why not relax for a while at the Tate Modern Restaurant, on level seven of the building. It offers fine dining with spectacular views over London. Alternatively, there's a more relaxed café or an espresso bar for a quick caffeine boost.
Entry to the permanent collections and many of the temporary exhibitions is free. The gallery is open from 10am to 6pm every day, and on Fridays and Saturdays it stays open until 10pm.
