London's National Gallery is home to one of the most impressive collections of European paintings in the world. Its permanent collection consists of artworks dating from the 13th to 20th centuries, and features such artists as Van Gogh, Monet and Cézanne. The Gallery's prominent position on Trafalgar Square makes it easily accessible to all, and its free admission means that you can pop in as many times as you like.
Located just behind the National Gallery is the equally interesting National Portrait Gallery. Here you can see five floors of portraits - paintings, sculptures, photographs and drawings - of famous (and infamous) faces in British history. We recommend a rest-stop at the Portrait Restaurant for afternoon tea and fabulous views across the rooftops.
Both galleries are open every day from 10am to 6pm.
