Once upon a time there was a large methane gas plant functioning along the north shore of Lake Union. It soon became a major hazardous waste site and was shut down. Thanks to a state-funded cleanup, the former waste site was beautified into a city park where dogs roam and kites fly. The former plant remains intact, adding a decrepit yet unique feel to the park.
Gas Works Park is entitled to its quirky reputation - the park hosts many local events such as Independence Day festivities complete with a gigantic inflatable head of the Statue of Liberty. It's also the starting point for the "World Naked Bike Race" - say no more!
