The Panama Hotel gives you a bit of history amidst a lot of comfort. Located in the International District, in what was once known as the old Japantown, the hotel was home to many Japanese immigrants and travellers in the early 1900s. As World War Two rolled around, Japanese immigrants were sent to internment camps. In fact, this hotel drew much attention in the 1990s when luggage full of these immigrants' belongings were discovered stored inside. The Panama also holds the last remaining Japanese-style bathhouse in the city.
The hotel itself is European style, with communal bathrooms. It's hard to resist the white linens and down comforters. And with rates starting at $65/night, it's quite the bargain. Make sure you try the adjoining tea house - there's a huge variety of teas from all around the world, with a particular emphasis on green teas.
