There are several options for getting to and from JFK. The 30- to 60-minute taxi ride to/from midtown is a $45 flat-fee (non-metered) plus bridge and tunnel tolls and gratuity. On the lower baggage claim level of all terminals you'll also find Ground Transportation Information counters, where you can reserve buses, shared-ride vans (Super Shuttle) and limousines. The least expensive option is the New York Airport Service ($10-$13 to/from Midtown, 45-60 minutes). Buses run approximately every 20-25 minutes and stop at hotels, Grand Central Terminal, Penn Station, and the Port Authority Bus Station.
