No trip to Washington, DC would be complete without a tour of the monuments - or at least some of them. The United States Capitol is a great place to start. A U.S. Capitol Visitors Center will debut on the building's east side in fall 2007, with an exhibition gallery, orientation theatres, a 600-seat cafeteria, and a gift shop. Until then, visitors have to settle for standard guided tours offered Monday through Saturday, 9am to 4.30pm. But that's hardly settling - you get to see where the U.S. Congress gets down to business. Free tickets are available at the Capitol Guide Service kiosk (1st Street SW and Independence Avenue), but they are on a first-come, first-served basis.
