On a Sunday morning at around 3.05am, it's every man for himself at Ben's Chili Bowl. The bars on U Street have closed, and patrons have a hankering for some chili fries (and chili dogs, chili burgers and chili subs). Those fries certainly hit the spot after a night of cocktails, but we recommend visiting during more civilised hours to appreciate a restaurant that is considered a D.C. institution. Ben's dates back to 1958. Famous jazz greats like Duke Ellington and Miles Davis were once known to frequent the establishment, and Bill Cosby is a fan of Ben's Original Chili Half-Smoke.
