You'll need special permission to get inside the President's home, but the view from the street is impressive in itself. Walk through Lafayette Park, take some pictures, and head to the nearby Renwick Gallery, a branch of the Smithsonian American Art Museum dedicated to American crafts from the 19th to 21st centuries. You can view unique art like the "Ghost Clock," hand-carved from a single block of mahogany. And on your way there, you might even catch a good protest or two.
Note: groups of 10 or more can request self-guided White House tours by writing to Congress (see website).
