At nearly 556 feet tall, the Washington Monument is visible from miles away, but you really have to get up close to appreciate this famous obelisk. Sunday morning is a good time to beat the crowds for an inside tour. Pick up your free tickets at the kiosk at 15th Street and Madison Drive (first-come, first-served). When possible, guided tours occur twice daily. Otherwise, you're on your own. Take the elevator up 500 feet, where the view spans all of Washington D.C. and parts of Virginia and Maryland, and stop at the bookstore one floor below. On your way back down, the elevator assistant will point out memorial stones donated by every U.S. state and several countries. If you blink, you'll miss them.
