It would take days to explore all 19 of the Smithsonian Institute's museums and galleries - but be sure to see at least one. The National Museum of Natural history, which houses dinosaur fossils and more than 120 million specimens, is a crowd-pleaser. For a condensed tour, the information centre in the Smithsonian Castle opens at 8.30am and contains exhibits from various museums. Where else can you see a giant bird-eating tarantula next to Kristi Yamaguchi's figure skates? Most museums are located on the National Mall and are open from 10am to 5.30pm. (The American History Museum, under renovation, reopens in 2008).
