It's easy to forget you are in a contemporary city when you're relaxing on an antique couch and admiring a portrait of George Washington. Such is the allure of Hotel Tabard Inn, a quiet hideaway in the bustling DuPont Circle neighborhood. Named for the hostelry in Chaucer's' Canterbury Tales, Tabard was formed from three Victorian row houses 80 years ago. Winding halls lead to 40 guestrooms and traditional décor features hardwood floors and Oriental rugs. If you visit the restaurant or cosy front lounge - as many locals do - try the herb-crusted wild boar chops. And don't be surprised to find your waitress stoking the wood-burning fireplace. When the weather permits request seating on the garden patio. Amenities are modest (sorry, no TVs), but guests enjoy WiFi Internet access in public areas and free use of the nearby Capital YMCA.
Rates: $104 to $218, including Continental breakfast.
