Pizza, like many things in Chicago, is big. Thick crust pizza, often known as Chicago-style, owes its beginnings to Pizzeria Uno (the original name for Uno Chicago Grill). Wedged into the basement of an old River North Victorian Building, the low ceilings, warehouse setting, parade of people and photo-covered walls enhance the feel that you are sitting down for a home-cooked meal. But there are often long wait times for seats and meals because each pie is made to specifications. The chunky tomato sauce (served on top), gooey cheese and thick extras (particularly the phone book sized layer of sausage) make two slices enough even for the heartiest of eaters. Recent renovations to the menu have added healthier options of spinach, sun-dried tomatoes and eggplant, but Uno never strays far from its cardiac-arresting roots and still offers a bacon cheeseburger pizza. If the restaurant is booked out, head across the street to Pizzeria Due for similar fare.
