Things to do in Chicago, Illinois, USA
Excessive boasting, however, is not part of the fabric of Chicago; how can a city founded as a trading market for farmers, named after a Native American word for 'garlic' and burned by a pyromaniac cow (more on that later) show too much pride? Today, Chicago continues its trading hub roots by attracting a variety of manufacturing and service businesses as well as ethnically diverse, shockingly friendly people who regularly infuse money, creativity and energy.
Chicago is also known as the 'Second City'. This moniker is not a comparison to New York City - America's perennial premier city - but refers to Chicagoans' resilience in rebuilding after a cow kicked over a lantern in 1871 and burned down the city; a fact that allows Chicagoans to perversely crow that their city is the only one to ever be wiped out by a cow. Given a chance to start again, Chicago built the first skyscraper and now possesses a picturesque skyline, immaculate, tree-lined streets (conveniently organised into a visitor-friendly grid) and ethnically diverse neighborhoods.
Whatever the reason or season for visiting, Chicago offers a variety of quality cuisine, activities and year-round (i.e. indoor) attractions to fulfill any week-long agenda. View the famed, towering architecture aboard a river and lake cruise. Walk, run, bike or blade along miles of uninterrupted lake-side beaches and parks. Eat and drink - rinse and repeat - at a renowned steak house, blues club or neighbourhood pub. Visit the world-class art, space, aquatic and historical exhibitions in the downtown museum campus. Help out the local economy by shopping at the exclusive boutiques along the pristine magnificent mile. Tour the eclectic shops, restaurants and bars in thriving Chinese, Polish, Mexican, Scandinavian and German neighbourhoods.
