Balboa Park is a must do, even if you are in town for a short visit. The largest urban cultural park in North America and home to 15 major museums and the San Diego Zoo, admission prices to the museums vary, but entrance to the park is free. The park is beautiful no matter what time of year you visit, though spring and summer are spectacular. Lush gardens, trees, performance artists and people watching make this place so much fun. Don't miss the rose garden (with over 2400 rose bushes) and cactus gardens ... who knew there were so many kinds of funky looking cacti (about 1300 plants currently)? There's plenty to eat and drink in the park but bring your walking shoes, because it covers 1,400 acres. A visitor's centre is on site for maps and information.
