If nightlife is on your list, you could stay within the Gaslamp Quarter and never experience a moment of downtime. Located in the recently revitalised downtown, it spans an area eight blocks wide and features more than 100 restaurants, cafes, bars, and trendy nightclubs, as well as fine art galleries and theatre venues. Some of the buildings date back to the late 1800s when the Gaslamp Quarter was established. The area later fell into disrepute when gamblers and prostitutes moved in and it became a red light district known as the Stingaree (eventually housing 120 bordellos). Famous lawman-turned-gambler Wyatt Earp ran three gambling halls here and you can visit a museum filled with the largest collection of Earp memorabilia in existence. For some fun local history, take a guided walking tour every Saturday at 11am. Tours depart from the William Heath Davis Historic House and Museum, 410 Island Avenue.
